What Happened by Peter Johnson (Front Street, 2007)
The unnamed narrator of Peter Johnson’s new novel, What Happened, has never been in so much trouble. Driving home from a party one snowy night, his friend Duane accidentally hits a man and then ditches the scene, leaving the narrator and his brother Kyle there to deal with the unconscious victim. The two brothers want to go to the cops, but Duane’s tyrannical father bullies them into keeping silent.
Life is already hard for the brothers, whose mother died of cancer and whose father abandoned them afterward. As the teens figure out how to handle the hit-and-run accident and steer clear of Duane’s father and his ice-queen wife (whose daughter Kyle is dating), they have to deal with some of life’s deepest questions, such as the existence of evil in the world. Johnson’s prose is poetic and written in a disjunctive, nontraditional narrative style. This engrossing novel reminds us that “what happened” is never a simple story and that, as Nietzsche said, “There are no facts, only interpretations.” (Jacob, The Loft)
