kissmeKiss Me, Kill Me By Lauren Henderson

What happens after the guy you like dies? What do you do when he dies in your arms, mid-kiss?

Scarlett has a crush on Dan McAndrew that’s so intense her palms sweat whenever he’s near; but it seems that Dan is destined to remain just a crush. Scarlett has gymnastics and her friends Luce and Allison, while Dan is of another world. He belongs to the girls who make up St.Tabitha’s poshest, most glamorous, lip gloss laden set; imagine “Mean Girls” with a British accent. Why on Earth would he ever look at her?

Then by some miracle, one day, Scarlett is invited to sit by the fountain with Plum and the posh set of St. Tabby’s. This leads to a party invitation, and the fateful kiss.

Afterwards, Scarlett is labeled a murderer by her classmates, so she flees to the countryside and her grandmother’s school, Wakefield Hall. It’s there she receives a note that reads,” It wasn’t your fault.”  This is something that Scarlett has repeated to herself countless times. The note’s mysterious appearance makes her question whether Dan’s death was in fact accidental.  Finding out the truth becomes Scarlett’s only concern, even when she is nearly failing Latin.

Scarlett is incredibly likable. She manages to be self-deprecating, without being self-hating. Her gymnastic training comes in handy at odd times, but somehow it works. Lauren Henderson has done a fantastic job blending mystery, a touch of romance, and the day to day nuances of her characters’ lives. All I can say is thank goodness that she’s written a sequel!
