When we first reported that director Chris Columbus (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Home Alone) has started filming the first in a series of movies based on Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson & the Olympians series, readers of The Virtual Loft drew lines in the sand proclaiming that Columbus had chosen a “terrible” cast. One commenter suggested that Anna Sophia Robb should be playing Anabeth while Josh Hutcherson should be Percy. A few subsequent commenters agreed with these choices while others did not. So, let’s hear it: If you had casting power for the upcoming movie version of The Lightning Thief who would you cast? Who would be your ideal Percy? Annabeth? Chiron? How about Ares? I personally don’t have a problem with the cast. I have enough faith that Chris Columbus can make the cast work. However, since is seems that Ares STILL hasn’t been cast, I’d suggest Dominic Purcell (Prison Break, Blade Trinity) for the role. He’s the perfect blend of royalty and thuggishness.

To everyone who is saying Ellen Page would make a good Thalia? Not so much. You said her role from juno fit Thalia perfectly, but it didn’t! Thalia is intense and impulsive. Juno was like.. REALLY laid back. she was laid back and messed up. Thalia is much more complicated. She’s intense, impulsive and conflicted. much more complex than Juno. I’m not sure Ellen page’s looks would pull Thalia off, let alone her acting. Don’t get me wrong, I think Ellen Page is an amazing actress. just not for Thalia.

Ok, here’s my opinion on the cast:
Percy-Pretty good. Logan Lerman is definitely what I imagined Percy would look like, and everything I’ve heard about him is positive too acting-wise. He’s a little old for the part, but otherwise good. I hope he can pull off being a 12 year old though.
Annabeth-Daddario is way too old for the part, and the movies she’s done in the past are nothing like this. That does make me wonder about her ability to play a 12 year old, but hopefully Chris will pull her off in the end. VERY upset that they won’t be changing her appearance more, but that’s not Daddario’s fault so I won’t hold it against her. (I mean, seriously! Brown hair? SOOO not Annabeth!) Also am afraid about what the Percy/Annabeth relationship will look like on screen considering their ages. Will it really work the way it does in the books? doubtful, in my opinion, especially since Daddario is older than Lerman.
Grover – I know nothing about Brandon Jackson, so it’s hard to judge him here. I know some people have been complaining about the fact that he’s black, but I have no problem with that factor. Sure, he might not be what the majority of people imagined Grover, but who said that Grover has to be white? It was never clarified in the books.
Everyone else is pretty good as far as I’m concerned. I’m most worried about Annabeth but hopefully chris colombus will make her work onscreen. Hopefully they will be as good as the books. I personally think I would make an amazing thalia, I have her looks perfectly not to mention that I do have a lot of acting experience. i’ll look into auditions for her. (I’m also the right girl age-wise.) My fingers are crossed that this will be a great movie, and that it won’t turn into another Disney franchise!!! (I HATE those!)

Thanks hannah you are about the only person that got it right about grover- the book didn’t clarify his color but it did say that he wore a rasta cap !. Also the cast is just too old-plain and simple – even percy! i pictured percy to be slightly plumper also annabhen maybe should be blonde, Luke just dosen’t look mean enough, he dosen’t look villain enough, thalia would have to look rough enough, gee… i hope they don’t mess that up also they should have no famous actor’s cause it just simly takes away from the book. When are the auditions for Thalia? I want that role more than I have wanted anything in my entire life. I have black hair, I can pass for 15, and even my character is kind of like her. Please tell me when auditions are going on I am doing everything I can to find out and prepare! I know I would be great!
They WONT HOLD OPEN AUDITIONS for a role like that. All you random people who want Thalia or Zoe or Artemis will need to do a LOT of work to even be considered for the role. You’d need a good agent, headshots, resume, TALENT, training, experience, and the money to fly to LA, Vancouver, or Toronto at a moments notice. My best friend’s an actress and just a few days ago her mother pulled her out of school without her even knowing what was going on and they flew to LA for like twelve different Movie auditions.
Also, people, just because your personality’s similar to a character’s, doesn’t mean you can act. It takes a lot of training to be able to be in film.
