Friday Is “Buy Indie Day” April 30, 2009

Tomorrow, Friday, May 1st, 2009, is Buy Indie Day across America.  Celebrate and support your local, independent bookstore by purchasing a paperback book, a hardcover, an audiobook – whatever.

Buy Indie Day is a project of IndieBound, “a community-oriented movement…that brings together booksellers, readers, indie retailers, local business alliances, and anyone else with a passionate belief that healthy local economies help communities thrive.”  Indiebound runs a great website that features book recommendations from independent booksellers across the country, a list of indie top sellers, and a handy storefinder to help you connect locally with independent bookshops.

You might be wondering, Who cares?  Why should I shop at indie stores?  Because when you do you help your community, the economy, and the environment.

Here at the Loft we recommend taking part in Buy Indie Day by shopping at Comix Revolution located at 606 Davis Street, (between Chicago and Orrington on Davis).  This fantastic store offers an extensive selection of “independent and alternative comics,” independent/underground magazines (everything from Found to The Believer, Bust to Cometbus), t-shirts, over two thousand graphic novels, books (“Noam Chomsky to…David Sedaris”), Ugly Dolls, and even games.  Comix Revolution is open M-F from 10 a.m. – 8 p.m., Saturday, 11 a.m. – 7 p.m., and Sunday from 12-6 p.m.

Manga Shakespeare In The Loft April 5, 2009

Feeling lost in Shakespeare’s verse? Don’t have a chance to see the plays performed on stage? The Loft now has a selection of Shakespeare’s plays in Manga form! Macbeth, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Hamlet, Julius Caesar, The Tempest, Romeo and Juliet - the Bard’s immortal poetry and stories come alive in stunning illustrations and shrewd adaptations. Let’s face it: Shakespeare’s words, while exquisitely rendered and timeless, can be a struggle to read on your own. Why not get a grip on the stories first with an edition of MANGA SHAKESPEARE? You’ll find them at call number YA 822.44, or ask a member of The Loft staff to help you find one.

Also, listen to this Wisconsin Public Radio broadcast from two weeks ago on Shakespeare in the modern world. Towards the end you’ll find a fascinating segment on adapting Shakespeare into graphic novel and comic book form.

Last Chance to see Death Note May 21, 2008

Death Note, based on the popular Manga series by Tsugumi Oba (that we have in the Loft), is playing in select theatres nationwide for just one more night (tonight, May 21).
